A former model and a bollywood actress, Mahima Chaudhry is a well known face in the world of Indian cinema. Originally named Ritu Chaudhry, Mahima was born on 13th September, 1973 in Darjeeling. She attended the Loreto Convent School and later joined Loreto College in       Darjeeling. She also won the ‘Miss Darjeeling’ title, a local beauty contest. Ritu Chaudhry adopted the screen name ‘Mahima’ on the advice of ace filmmaker Subhash Ghai.
Mahima Chaudhry worked as a model prior to joining the film industry. She looked simply stunning in the TV commercial of Charmis, she also appeared in Pepsi advertisement but was overshadowed by Aishwarya Rai. Mahima made her cinematic debut in Subhash Ghai’s family drama ‘Pardes’ released in 1997. Mahima portrayed the character of a village girl, Ganga with utmost genuineness and was appreciated for her performance. ‘Pardes’ became a commercial and critical success and Mahima the Best Female Debut Award at the Filmfare and Zee Cine Awards. She was also nominated for the coveted Filmfare Best Actress Award. Mahima was chosen Lux Face of The Year 1998 at Zee Cine Awards.


After the splendid success of ‘Pardes’, Mahima appeared in moderately successful films like ‘Daag: The fire’, ‘Pyaar Koi Khel Nahin’, ‘Deewane’,’Kurukshetra’, ‘Dil Hai Tumhaara’ and ‘Dil Kya Kare’. Though these movies were not box office hits, Mahima got an opportunity to portray different kind of characters. She worked with the best names in the bollywood including Rekha, Sanjay Dutt, Akshay Kumar, Ajay Devgan, Manisha Koirala, Kajol, Shilpa Shetty, Suneil Shetty, Sunny Deol, Urmila Matondkar, Tabu, Priety Zinta, among others.


Mahima Chaudhry appeared in a supporting role in Dharmesh Darshan’s romantic drama ‘Dhadkan’ alongside Akshay Kumar, Suneil Shetty and Shilpa Shetty. The film became a huge success in India as well as overseas. Mahima received Best Supporting Actress at Bollywood Movie Awards and was nominated at the Filmfare and Star Screen Awards. Mahima Chaudhry was later seen in a number of movies that failed to do well at the box office, however her performance in Rajkumar Santhoshi’s ‘Lajja’ and Priyadarshan’s ‘Yeh Teraa Ghar Yeh Meraa Ghar’ were commended by the critics as well as audiences.


Mahima Chaudhry played several supporting roles in multi-starrer films; she won a Filmfare nomination for ‘Dil Kya Kare’ and Zee Cine Awards nomination for ‘Dobara’, both in the supporting actor category. Mahima Chaudhry came into controversy for her 2006 release ‘Souten’ directed by Karan Razdan. The film also starred Gulshan Grover, Padmini Kolhapure, Vikram Singh, Kiran Rathod and Shakti Kapoor. Mahima accused the director, Karan Razdan for allegedly using camera angles to make her look vulgar and obscene.


She also hit the news with her claims that the notable filmmaker Prakash Jha had cast her in ‘Gangajal’ but instead the lead was played by Gracy Singh. Prakash Jha and the leading actor Ajay Devgan refused to such claims and stated that Gracy Singh was their first and last choice.


Mahima was romantically involved with the Indian tennis player Leander Paes until she found out that he and Sanjay Dutt’s ex-wife Rhea Pillai were having a secret affair. Mahima broke up with Leander and is now married to Bobby Mukherjee, a renowned architect. The two them co-incidentally met at an Hotelier’s conference in Las Vegas in 2006.
