Well-known for her flamboyance, Shilpa Shetty is an Indian actress and former model. Shilpa Shetty was born on 8th June, 1975 to Surendra and Sunanda Shetty in Mangalore. Her parents are in the business of tamper-proof cap manufacture for the pharmaceutical industry. Her younger sister Shamita is also a Bollywood actress and the two shared the silver screen in 2005 release ‘Fareb’.Shilpa shetty studied at the St. Anthony Girls' High School and Podar College, Mumbai. A fitness fanatic, Shilpa is a trained Bharatanatyam dancer and black belt in karate. Shilpa was previously dating superstar Akshay Kumar before he got married to Twinkle Khanna in 2000. Shilpa tied the wedlock to businessman Raj Kundra in November, 2009 and officially changed her name to Shilpa Shetty Kundra.
Shilpa Shetty joined the glamour world as a model when she appeared in the TV commercial for Limca in 1991. She made her bollywood debut with 1993 release smash hit ‘Baazigar’. Abbas Mustan’s thriller ‘Baazigar’ also starred Shahrukh Khan and Kajol; Shilpa received her first Filmfare Best Supporting Actress Nomination for ‘Baazigar’.
She played the leading role for the first time in ‘Aag’ opposite Govinda released in 1994. In the same year, she was seen in a mega hit film ‘Main Khiladi Tu Anari’ alongside Akshay Kumar and Saif Ali Khan. Shilpa’s next few films like ‘Aao Pyaar Karen’, ‘Hathkadi’ and ‘Auzaar’ became critical as well as commercial failures. Shilpa Shetty won the Best Supporting Actress Award at the Bollywood Movie Award for her performance in ‘Pardesi Babu’ released in 1998.
Shilpa’s biggest success came in 2000 with Dharmesh Darshan’s ‘Dhadkan’ that became huge commercial success in India as well as overseas. Shilpa gave her best performance in ‘Dhadkan’ and was nominated in the Best Actress category at several award ceremonies. Shilpa’s comic timing was highly appreciated in ‘Rishtey’ also starring Anil Kapoor and Karishma Kapoor.
2004 was a remarkable year for Shilpa as she won over the critics with her exemplary portrayal of an HIV infected woman in ‘Phir Milenge’. The film earned Shilpa Shetty the Best Actress nomination at the Filmfare and also provided a momentum to her charity work related to HIV- AIDS. Later that year she appeared in commercially successful films ‘Garv’ and ‘Dus’.
Shilpa made her first television appearance as a judge in Sony Entertainment’s reality dance show ‘Jhalak Dikhla Jaa’ in 2006. She was also seen in Mani Ratnam’s stage show. Shilpa’s performance in Anurag Basu’s contemporary film ‘Life In A...Metro’ won her accolades and the film became the first Bollywood movie ever to be premiered at Leicester Square. Shilpa Shetty also starred in Deol’s home production ‘Apne’ that became a box office success. Shilpa shetty became the first Indian to participate in the celebrity version of Big Brother UK. After incidents of racial discrimination and bullying, Shilpa Shetty finally won the show. Shilpa gained international stardom after winning the show and was invited to the House of Commons to meet the Prime Minister Tony Blair.
She also received an invitation to meet Queen Elizabeth II at Marlborough House in London in March 2007. Shilpa Shetty was flooded with commercial assignments after her victory at the Celebrity Big Brother. She featured on the Cover page of first Indian edition of OK! Magazine. Shilpa appeared on Color channel as the host of Bigg Boss, season -2.
Shilpa Shetty and her husband Raj Kundra are the co-owners of the Indian Premier League cricket team Rajasthan Royals. Shilpa Shetty is closely associated with a number of causes and charities particularly for HIV-AIDS and PETA.
Shilpa Shetty is currently filming for ‘The Desire’ that is being made in three languages- Hindi, English and Chinese.
